If You’re Thinking of Starting A Pop/Punk Band: An Interview With “Not My Weekend.”

Before now, saying not my weekend was a negative thing. But thanks to this incredible band, it could be the best thing that has ever happened to you. I got a chance to talk with Patrick, the lead singer and guitar player for “Not My Weekend” about their music, fans, and next steps for 2020. Here’s what he had to say:

What helped shape the unique sound of the band?

Acoustic guitar. Whether it sounds like it or not, every song originated from the sound of an acoustic guitar, keeping the music upbeat and fun to listen to. They try to use some electronic influence, being influenced by the sounds of Cobra Starship.

Who would you say has influenced you the most in the process of your music?

Their producer has been a big influence, helping them decide what will keep the audience engaged in their material. He also said that writing a song with another artist helped shape and change their musical perspective.

What was the inspiration behind “When You’re Around” and “Love”?

For “When You’re Around,” he said that young love and an elementary school crush helped create the theme for this song. A girl dating a guy that no one liked, but he decided it was best to respect her wished. And then, when he finally got his shot, he wanted desperately to sweep her off her feet. When it comes to the song “Love,” he explained how he felt when one of his ex’s began to date a friend. He said that seeing the beginning of the relationship unfold felt uncomfortable, helping to create the very relatable lyrics.

How was the name “Yellow” picked for the EP?

He originally joked that when picking the EP title, they couldn’t think of another name. Then he admitted that the EP leaks positive anxiousness and the feeling of nervousness in relation to going after romantic interests.

For someone who has never listened to you guys before, how would you describe your music?

Disney-inspired pop/punk.

What are some of the plans for the band in 2020?

They would love to hit triple digits in their tour date count. As well as putting out a full album with accompanying music videos for some songs.

What would you say is the main reason you started making music?

Bowling For Soup at the Oklahoma State Fair; It was the coolest thing he had ever seen.

What is the creative process like for the band as a whole?

It changes every time. If everybody is pleased with the rough draft, they change it to fit the sound they want for the track.

How do you keep going when it gets difficult?

Touring helps them a lot, having to constantly be around each other. As well as interaction through social media about music and other interesting topics with fans and the community.

What made you guys want to cover a Jonas Brothers song?

It was the best song of the decade for the band. No question. There were asked to be a part of a compilation album and originally picked “Thank U, Next” by Ariana Grande. When they realized this song didn’t fit them properly, they recorded a version of the song “Sucker.” After they heard the finished product, the band knew this was the song they had to use.

How has social media influenced your music and your connection to your fans?

Since it has been around for the band’s entire existence, it has always been a part of the music. Starting out with just a Facebook page, they were able to expand to other forms of social connection, riding the different internet popularity waves. They continue to use older media to keep people updated, while using the newer ones for a more personal fanbase connection.

To keep up with this band, you can find them on many social media platforms.
