5 Artists You Need To Know From Connecticut

Connecticut, despite its small size and little population, is home to both underground and well known musicians. It has a fair amount of music venues which are always hosting local band shows, and large arenas that are famous tour stops for bigger artists. The music scene in Connecticut is underrated, but definitely does not go unnoticed! Here are my top 5 picks of artists from the Constitution State that you may not have even known were from Connecticut, and are worth listening to!

PORTRAIT PARTY:

I first found indie-rock band Portrait Party after they gave me a follow on Instagram. I decided to check them out, and was excited to see that they were CT-based! They are a fairly new band, having only released their first single “Underlying Chaos” in late February 2019. Their laid-back, smooth style of music - as shown in their first single - was definitely something that caught my attention. You can find “Underlying Chaos” on the band’s Bandcamp page, stream it on Spotify, and look out for new content from Portrait Party in the future.

MGMT:

Formed in the early 2000’s at Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT, MGMT is an electro-pop group that is still releasing music and playing shows to this day. Their clever use of vocals and synthesizers create catchy and meaningful songs that could appeal to fans of artists such as Passion Pit and Vampire Weekend. Their newest album, “Little Dark Age,” has defined MGMT’s current era and aesthetic, which I think is definitely worth following.

JAVIER COLON:

Born and raised in my hometown, Javier Colon has been pursuing music since the early 2000s, and went on to become the first winner of NBC’s The Voice in 2011. He continues to make music today, mostly based around his acoustic guitar and piano, as well as his raw vocals. He’s opened for artists on worldwide tours such as Maroon 5, and has headlined some tours of his own. Javier has a very unique sound and it’s thrilling to see that he is contributing to Connecticut’s music scene.

BRONZE RADIO RETURN:

Bronze Radio Return is an indie-rock band from Hartford, CT. With their sound being similar to bands such as Jukebox The Ghost and The Mowgli’s, I truly think that they are worth a listen. Their blend of instruments and vocals creates a very unique, appealing sound. Bronze Radio Return’s newest album, “Entertain You”, was just released in February of this year, and deserves much more recognition!

TUNE-YARDS:

The music created by Merrill Garbus is one of the most unique projects I have ever listened to. Her mix of different vocal samples and instruments opens up a whole new world for the indie-pop genre. Tune-Yards is definitely a band that I will keep my eye on, and I recommend that you do too!Instagram Twitter Spotify
