INTERVIEW: Trey Simon

Can you introduce yourself for the people who may not know who you are?

Its pretty simple really..  I'm Trey Simon I'm a singer/songwriter out of Rochester, Mi.

What drew you to the music industry? When did you decide that this was what you wanted to do?

I always loved music, it was one of the only things that ever made me react. I was never really drawn to the industry, I never knew anything about it. Honestly, I still don't know too much. It changes every day. I was more drawn to songs, and at an early age I discovered how powerful words were. Over time i just learned how to put a melody behind it.

I remember in high school I released my first couple of songs on iTunes and myspace at the time lol.

Word about my music started spreading around after the school news program filmed me singing and talking about my music for the morning show that aired every day.

Some of the kids in the leadership program were putting on a talent show and invited me to come out and play. To my surprise, when I started singing my song at the show the whole auditorium was singing my song back to me and knew all the words. It floored me! At that moment I told myself that I wanted to do that for the rest of my life.

What has been your favorite place to perform at?

I gotta say that my favorite place to perform at is this beautiful listening room venue in Lake Orion, Mi called 20 front street. I've played there probably a dozen times. The crowd there is always intently listening and the people that run it are the kindest folks around. Beautiful community they have built there.

Do you collaborate with others? If so, what is that process like?

I really haven't done much collaborations with the other artists. Jay Vinchi is the first artist i will be releasing a collaboration with on my new single coming out Feb 14th "Walk My Way". He's an incredible artist and i had such a great time whipping up this track with him.

What's something that has happened in your career so far that you'll always remember?

There has definetly been some pretty incredible moments so far in my early career, but I gotta say the most memorable would be opening up for Patti Labelle at the Motor City Casino Soundboard. It was the biggest crowd I've played for so far and the production they had set up was another level.

During her set she stopped the show and told the crowd that she fell in love with my voice and that we were going to be playing more shows together in the future. It was insane! It's not everyday that you have a multi grammy award winning artist and rock & roll hall famer give you props like that. Its something I'll cherish forever.

How would you describe your music style? Who are some artists who you would consider to have a similar style?

I grew up with many different musical influences, but I always gravitate towards singer songwriters. I absolutely fell in love with music of artists like Ray Lamontagne, Amos Lee, and John Mayer. But John Legend became a huge influence of mine vocally.

I also love the blues greats like BB king, Lightning hopkins and crooners like Nat King Cole.

I like to think of myself as a soulful singer songwriter.

What can we expect to see from you in the future in terms of new music?

I definitely see more collaborations in my future. I'm also starting to book more shows nationally and looking forward to diving into other cultures all around the world. Sharing my heart and music every step of the way.

Do you have any advice for bands and artists smaller than you that are trying to build a community like yours?

My biggest advice to any one pursuing the dream is that it serves so much more than you. Your gifts are made to be a blessing to people. Never see people as an inconvenience but instead as the fuel that runs your purpose. Stay humble and build authentic relationships. Find something to be grateful for every day and take it one day at a time.
