REVIEW: "Rare" by Selena Gomez

After being out of the solo music world for almost five years, Selena Gomez finally released her third album, “Rare,” with much anticipation from fans. Even though her songs with Marshmello, Kygo, and J Balvin were on the charts and on the radio, her fans were still waiting for more. And that is what they got. Here is a song-by-song breakdown of what to expect with Selena’s new tracks.

Rare

The title track from an album is always served with a lot of expectations. But with her low alto voice and background bass beats, she was able to meet every listener’s needs. Starting off with a low fade intro, she begins the story of feeling unappreciated by her significant other. She wants to be treated like the unique individual she is, but still admits that she has high expectations for the relationship. By saying that she’s “not gonna beg for you,” she shows off her higher area vocals while still saying what she desires in a way that is understandable to anyone who has ever felt unappreciated.

Dance Again

With the first true dance track on the album, she tells the story of leaving all the negativity behind to feel alive again. With a soft piano beginning, it tricks you into thinking it’s a ballad before quickly changing into the electropop beat that it holds for the rest of the song. You can tell that in this song she has been able to come to terms with finding the happiness in the struggle without turning it into a sad, emotional track.

Look At Her Now

Continuing with the electric dance beat sound of the last song, she once again uses an upbeat backing track to underline the struggle of a toxic relationship and how she has been able to become stronger because of it. While she points out what the significant other did wrong, she also takes blame for her faults as she did with “Rare.” She believes in a bright and happy romantic future while keeping the listener engaged with the fun tone in the rest of the song.

Lose You To Love Me

With this song being her first single off the album, she uses her talents of raw vocal and piano to portray the feeling of betrayal by someone she trusted. She talks through her grieving process and how she came out as a stronger person on the other side of the entire ordeal. She wants people to know that you can learn to love yourself again after disappointment and heartbreak, whether you think you’re strong enough or not.

Ring

Going back to an older 1950’s and 60’s sound, she tells of how much she can control the men in her life and how they need to have her. She leaves them hanging instead of giving what they want, making them want more and giving her more control. Unlike the other songs on the album, this song proves the powerful effect women can have if they use it wisely.

Vulnerable

With the first romantic song on the album, Selena uses her deeper range to sensually explain her worries in a relationship. She wants to be able to be herself with her significant other but is worried about being too vulnerable to pain and heartbreak. She doesn’t want to lose them but is scared due to past experiences she has had in relationships. She makes the tough decision to be herself with that person, letting her guard down even though she knows the consequences.

People You Know

Following the story arch of the last song, she tells of a lost connection with someone she wishes she had never known to begin with. She feels like she doesn’t even know who this person is anymore and continues to feel guilty for letting things happen between them. She has lost a lot of people and didn’t want to lose this person, too. But she doesn’t know recognize who they are now.

Let Me Get Me

Going back to the original dance beat style of the album, she ends a destructive cycle with herself and starts to enjoy her life. She has decided to live in the good moments while they happen instead of being in constant worry. She won’t let her get herself down and lives life to the fullest.

Crowded Room

Holding the first feature on the album, this song with 6LACK talks of how it feels at the beginning of something new. She feels a strong pull towards this person and hopes they feel the same. They seem to be on their own little planet, sharing this precious moment together before it is over.

Kinda Crazy

Starting off with the first guitar sound on the album, Selena tells the story of a relationship that started out amazing until the person showed their true colors. This person only wants her around when they need her, but not any other time. They are distant and secretive, making her feel confused about where they stand. Even though they are never around, she still gets romantic messages from them, making her feel like they aren’t really into her anymore.

Fun

Going back to the party vibe, she sings about having feelings for someone and acting on them, even though she knows it won’t last. She knows that this person isn’t the relationship type, but thinks that they will be interesting to hang out with. She follows her instincts and doesn’t get too attached, letting her have some fun instead of drama with her romance.

Cut You Off

A song about feeling the end of a relationship and wanting this person to be out of her life forever. With a simple backing and light backing vocals, she says she doesn’t even feel the attachment anymore and is ready to move on. She isn’t in her feeling and wants the other person to leave her alone because she is done with them. It is most definitely a song everyone can relate to in one way or another.

A Sweeter Place

With this being the last song on the album, Selena returns to the pop dance beat from earlier. She wants to be with this person but doesn’t want something too public. With the second feature on this album given to Kid Cudi, they share a story of hearts being free to love. She feels open to exploring this romantic opportunity without pressure from the outside world to label anything.

With every song holding a different meaning, this album is full of songs that everyone can jam to and relate to. Selena Gomez was expected to turn out something better than her last album and she delivered, giving fans what they had been wanting for almost five years.
