REVIEW: COIN, Fitz and the Tantrums, and Young the Giant Show

On July 20th, I saw Young the Giant, COIN, and Fitz and the Tantrums live on their joint summer tour. COIN was the opener, and Young the Giant and Fitz and the Tantrums were the main acts. Just to get this out of the way, I went to the concert mainly for Young the Giant and COIN. Before the concert, I had only ever heard around 3 or 4 songs from Fitz and the Tantrums.

Starting with COIN, it was an amazing show, but the crowd was incredibly disappointing. Aside from a few other people, my friend and I were the only ones singing and dancing along to the music. It seemed as if people didn’t care to show up for COIN, which was disappointing considering COIN is such a good band. Either way, I had a great time with my friend!

Ever since COIN released “Crash My Car," I had been anticipating hearing it live because it is such an amazing song with the BEST energy. I just knew it would be amazing live. This song gives you the sense of belonging to this band in front of you, and that’s exactly what you wanna feel when seeing one of your favorite bands live. Despite the horrific crowd, the song was incredible live and I’m so happy I got to experience it.

COIN closed out the set with “Fingers Crossed," which is my favorite song by them. It’s the song that got me into them in the first place, and I just have such good memories surrounding that song. Being able to scream your lungs out and dance to your favorite song without caring about what anyone thinks of you is one of the best feelings in the world. For so long, I have watched videos of “Fingers Crossed” live, and the fact that I finally experienced it for myself makes my heart feel fulfilled.

Before that day, I had never seen COIN live. Each time that they have ever come to Florida, I haven’t been able to go which was always disheartening to me. They have always been one of the bands on my concert bucket list, therefore this show was incredibly exciting and extremely special to me.

Going into the set of Fitz and the Tantrums, as I said earlier, I wasn’t completely into it because I wasn’t a huge fan of their music. Although, they did have great energy live and they did sound good; their music just isn’t my cup of tea.

Now, the main event of the show, Young the Giant. Young the Giant has been one of my favorite bands for seven years now, and in that time, I had never seen them live. Kind of like COIN, they haven’t been to Florida recently so I haven’t been able to see them. This was my first time seeing them, which is what I think made it one of the best nights of my life.

They opened their show with “Oblivion”, which was a great choice. It caught everyone’s attention and made sure everyone’s eyes were on them. The energy of when they first came on was so good, and I would do anything to experience that again; the videos just don’t do it justice.

Jumping right into “Something to Believe In," this song was INCREDIBLE live, and the energy was even better because it’s one of those songs that everyone knows the words to. Hearing everybody singing the lyrics back to the band is just really heartwarming to experience. Not to mention the fact that Sameer’s vocals were beyond amazing.

Skipping over a few songs, “Amerika” is next. “Amerika” is by far one of my favorite songs by them, and I have been waiting for the moment that I would be able to experience it live. “Amerika” is just a really good hype up song and has this indescribably cool atmosphere. The visuals and lights were just a nice little cherry on top. Something about hearing it live has deepened my love for the song even more, which I didn’t think was possible. I screamed my lungs out and danced like nobody was watching; I let loose and it felt amazing. It was one of my favorite songs that they performed.

Then we get into the heart-wrenching songs of the night. They performed their songs “Titus Was Born” and “Firelight” back to back, which made it hard for me to be able to choke back tears. “Titus Was Born” was beautiful, the way the blue light was shining on him as if he was an angel ascending to Heaven, and the way his voice was so soft and gentle; everything was just beautiful about this performance. Then when the instruments pick up at the end and it gets a little upbeat, everyone in the crowd mimicked that energy and I thought that was cool. There weren’t any crazy visuals or crazy lights, but it didn’t need those things; the band and the crowd singing along was amazing in itself.

“Firelight” was a real tear-jerker. I’m not going to lie, tears were on the verge of escaping during the entirety of this song. There were even fewer lights for this song than there were in “Titus Was Born." There was just a regular spotlight shining on him, and much like the previous performance, he looked like an absolute angel. Sameer’s voice was so effortlessly beautiful. The thing that stood out to me the most during this song was an incredible atmosphere. Sameer told the crowd to turn on the flashlights on their phones when the drums picked up in the song. When the drums finally picked up towards the end, I turned around and everyone had their lights on and everyone was swaying back and forth. Nothing else that night beat the atmosphere during that song; it was just perfect.

Next up was “Cough Syrup," and this is another one that I have been anticipating hearing live. This song means so much to me because it is the song that got me into them 7 years ago. I remember having this song on repeat for WEEKS because I loved it so much. This song holds a special place in my heart and has an even more special place in my heart now that I’ve heard it live. This was probably one of my favorites that they performed, mostly because it had the best energy and atmosphere. Of course, this is Young the Giant’s most popular song so everyone knew the words. Everyone was dancing and singing their hearts out, and it was the song that people participated the most in.

The band left the stage after “Call Me Back," but entered a quick couple minutes later. The band made their entrances, one by one, but the one entrance that stood out to me the most was Sameer. Sameer came back on stage wearing his iconic sparkly cape, and yes, he DID look like a king.

“Superposition” was fun live, and of course, almost everyone knew the words considering it’s another song of theirs that blew up on alternative radio. Sameer looked like disco ball because the lights were reflecting off of the sparkles on his cape, and I think that added to the song. “Tightrope” had this same energy, and I completely let loose during that song. I think it is a contender of what song I danced the hardest to.

Then, we make the final leap to the last song of the night, “My Body." They have been playing this song as their closer ever since they released it, which is understandable because it is the most hype song and gets the audience pumped. It makes sense to have an energetic song as your last because then the band gets that lasting memory of the crowd having an amazing time. Seeing people dance and sing to your songs is probably a great feeling to the artists. I had mixed feelings of happiness and sadness during this song. I was happy because I was super energetic during this song and I love Young the Giant SO much. But that sadness was still there because I didn’t want it to be over; I didn’t want the amazing night to come to an end.

Of course, though, all good things must come to an end. Soon enough they were saying goodbye to Miami and waving to us as they walked off the stage. This night was one I will never forget. I saw two of my favorite bands all in ONE night, and it was something I will remember for the rest of my life. The heat was almost unbearable because it was in an outdoor venue, but the excitement made me forget about the sizzling heat. The light show and visuals weren’t anything crazy, but the performances were good enough without them. They didn’t need all the extra things to make it a good concert, because it was amazing on its own. I’m so glad I got to see them, and in conclusion, I love COIN and Young the Giant.
