REVIEW: "Doom Days" by Bastille

Bastille is a pop-rock band out of London, UK that consists of Dan Smith (lead vocals, keyboard), Kyle J Simmons (keyboard, bass, guitar, vocals), Will Farquarson (bass, guitar) and Chris Wood (drums). Bastille has released a numerous amount of music since 2013 including their debut album, Bad Blood, along with the deluxe version titled All This Bad Blood, their second album Wild World, a song with Marshmello named “Happier," a song with Seeb called “Grip,” and finally, their third album Doom Days.

Quarter Past Midnight: Being released on May 9, 2018, this was the first single to be released for the album. The song starts with Dan singing in the very beginning and leads in smoothly to the chorus by adding more and more bass. Between the amazing vocals and the very dance-able bass, I think it’s the perfect way to start the album. It’s definitely a song that you can’t help bopping to, even just a little. I love when it’s just mostly vocals for a minute, then the music comes in strong. This song is one of my personal favorites from this album.

Bad Decisions: The music, in the beginning, is so pretty and I love how loud the vocals are when they come in as well as how the music slowly comes in with clapping. When the chorus comes along, the music is very upbeat and then the beat continues. I love the lyrics to this song and the high notes Dan hits are so impressive. The best way to describe this song is that it’s just so beautiful yet dancy at the same time.

The Waves: The transition to this song is so smooth. It starts with really nice piano then the vocals come in then there’s bass. Right before the chorus it’s just Dan singing and then the beat comes in and it’s another dance-able one. This is a hard song to describe for me because there’s so much going on, but it’s a really good song and I love the beat and it’s kind of a mix between the sounds of their past albums, with a new sound added to it.

Divide: The piano is so calm then the vocals come in and it’s just Dan and the piano. It’s so beautiful that you might cry. Dan’s vocals are obviously amazing, but in this song, I love his voice even more. Some drums come in quietly, almost halfway through the song, and it just adds that much more to the song. Towards the end, there’s a part where it’s just vocals and quiet piano, then it's just vocals but it’s multiple people/layers. Then it picks back up again. Between the piano, quiet drums, and Dan’s voice, this song is such an emotional one but such a beautiful one.

Million Pieces: A nice beat comes in pretty quickly, shortly followed by vocals, then some synth. This song is more of an electronic one, but I feel like even people who don’t really like electronic music will like this. When there’s about a minute left, the vocals are loud and the music is quieter then slowly gets louder, leading back to the very catchy chorus.

Doom Days: Released on April 25, 2019, this song was the second single to be released for this album. In the very beginning, Dan says something backwards, which I believe is “all I think about is you” twice. The song starts with just vocals and guitar and the lyrics are already relatively sad. About a minute in, the amazing beat drops then stops and it’s just vocals with piano then it picks back up. The beat and the bass in this song gives me chills. The chorus is so catchy and dancy even though the lyrics are a bit sad.

Nocturnal Creatures: In the very beginning you can already tell this is a catchy song. The piano is so pretty in this song and the bass is really nice, again. About a minute and a half in, Dan repeats “we’re nocturnal creatures” again and there’s such a nice beat. The song picks back up again but with a louder beat this time. The chorus is definitely catchy and everything about this song is just so good. Like I’ve said, I love it when it’s just vocals and then the music comes back strong.

4AM: The guitar, in the beginning, is very aesthetic and then Dan comes in singing quietly, then a low beat comes in then stops and it’s vocals and guitar and bass. When you have headphones on, Dan is singing one thing on the left and another on the right and I love that. I also love all the music that comes together at the end at how there's just quiet talking and quiet music. At the very end, Dan repeats “I can’t remember” then says “help me piece it all together darling," which are lines from "Quarter Past Midnight."

Another Place: This song is another favorite of mine from the album. It starts with vocals and another nice beat, then the beat picks up more, then even more at the chorus. This song is such a fun one, especially with the beat. If you listen to the lyrics, this song is relatable because many people think about what he’s saying, and feel the same way about certain parts. Close to the end, it slows down and picks up again at the chorus so smoothly.

Those Nights: This song was the fourth single for the album. In the beginning, there’s some music and loud vocals. The beat and music for the chorus come in so well and Dan’s vocals are so smooth. The beat is nice and the song is just slow enough, that it’s a nice song to just lay there and stare at the ceiling or even stars to. This is another song that I feel like a lot of people can relate to. The music at the end is something that's very unique to me. This song would also be perfect for a movie. At the end of the song, Dan says “from my brain,” which are lyrics from "Joy," then it transitions to the next, and final song of the album.

Joy: This was the third single for the album. This has to be one of the most catchy songs ever. The beat builds up and gets faster, then the chorus hits and it’s, again, so catchy and dance-able. This is honestly such a cute song, and so many people can relate, whether it’s with a crush or a partner. I mean, I just don’t know how you could not dance to this song. Dan hits a high note, then there’s a lot of vocals and all the music is so upbeat and then he says “how do you always know when I’m down” to conclude the song and the album.

In conclusion, this whole album is a big mix of beautiful and very upbeat songs and it’s an album you can definitely get lost in. I highly suggest you go check it out and experience it for yourself!
