REVIEW: "Maybe - Side A" by Valley

Recently, I discovered a band called Valley. It was good timing, because they just released their new EP Maybe - Side A on November 23, with Maybe - Side B coming out in 2019. Valley is a pop band from Toronto and consists of Karah James, Mike Brandolino, Rob Laska, and Alex DiMauro. Some of their musical influences include The 1975, St. Lucia, Arkells, and Walk The Moon.

Now that you are more familiar with Valley, let's jump into the EP starting with the song "Maybe.” The beginning of this song is very soothing; then about a minute in, it begins to pick up the pace and continues with a pleasant beat until the song completes. This song is a decently short one because it's their intro for all that’s to come in the EP. The music in this song has traces that remind me of LANY, as it has that relaxing and artistic, tasteful feel to it.

The second song on the EP is titled "There's Still A Light In The House." This song is very at ease, yet ties in a joyous vibe. This song is a favorite of mine and it ties in well together; the beat, the background music pulling it together, their voices and how well they compliment each other, and the lyrics fit together to make a perfectly cohesive sound. The influence from “St. Lucia” can be heard, but I applaud their ability to make it their own sound.

The third song on the EP is called "Closer To The Picture". As it starts, the song emits a 90s vibe. The vocals were shown off yet again in this song, as the voice is fitting for the groovy sound that changes between songs. The lyrics are relatable and the music in the background is very original and refreshing, using distinct beats and melodies that highlight Valley’s sound. The song encompasses the feeling of wanting to relax and lay down for a little while.

In the fourth song, "Loop Love", the beat in the background instantly reminded me of the new Walk The Moon, but again, Valley was able to make it their own sound. As the song moves along and it begins to pick up, it makes you want to get up and dance because of the upbeat vibe the song gives off. This song hits home for some, advising you not to let someone hold you back.

The fifth song is called "Namedropper.” Right off the bat, the song is easing and again, Valley is able to make it cheery. The background music stands out, especially the bass, which is more prominent. In certain parts of this song, the vocals remind me of the artist

Lauv. Even though I have mentioned this before, I find it unbelievable how well all the vocals go together!

Last, but not least, the sixth and final song is "Push For Yellow (Shelter).” A part of this song that I noticed instantly and had me hooked was the metaphors used. The song is beautiful, especially when the melody picks up during certain parts. From the keys to the lyrics, I cannot point out one misfitting part in this song. It was very well put together and it is a close second favorite for me on this EP.

Overall, I really enjoy this EP and I'm thankful I came across Valley when I did! Every song on the EP was able to tie in all the elements of a good song and I could not find one thing that should be changed on this EP. Everyone should go check out Maybe - Side A by Valley to experience the music first-hand, along with their other music, especially if you like LANY, The 1975, Walk The Moon, MILKK or The Aces. Lastly, remember to check out Maybe - Side B, coming out in 2019!
