On Friday, December 7th, Columbus alt-pop act Vesperteen (Colin Rigsby) released his first single since the release of his sophomore EP, The Hype Is Dead, in May of 2018. Before its release, “Operate” was heard by lucky fans at a few live shows, which lead to the highly anticipated release of the song. The single has garnered over 2,000 plays on Spotify after just one weekend.
The track starts off with a verse accompanied by a simple beat and a few scattered notes but quickly takes off into a complex, layered melody, carried by Rigsby’s vocals. The pre-chorus captures the emotion behind the song with the lyrics: “Can we talk about it / Just wanna talk about it / Tired of watching you waste your life away / You gotta turn around / You gotta let it go.”
However, the chorus brings an upbeat vibe back to the song. This is a chorus that fans can sing along to, whether they’re screaming it at a show or humming to their car radio. The second verse builds on the chorus, showing more of the emotional depth that Vesperteen stressed alongside the song’s release. The link to the track was accompanied by a short message from Rigsby, reading “This song is incredibly personal and vulnerable to release.” This raw, vulnerable side of the track is not lost among all its catchy hooks.
In the song’s bridge, the voices of attendees from the "Speed of Light" video release party, can be heard layered with the instrumental track as well as Rigsby’s own vocals. This personal touch connects fans right before “Operate” launches into its last glorious chorus, which ends the track.
Overall, as a Vesperteen fan myself, I was not disappointed by “Operate.” I had the privilege of seeing the song performed live in Canton, Ohio last month, but the studio version outshines my video of the live performance by far. “Operate” can be found on streaming and downloading sites now!
