Last Friday, January 25, Walk The Moon took their winter tour through Grand Rapids, Michigan. Despite the increasingly cold and snowy weather, I was able to attend the event, and I’m so glad I did.
I took my twelve-year-old sister along, so we had far from the best seats in the house, but Walk The Moon, as well as opener Bear Hands, had an energy that made it from the stage all the way to the back of the venue. Many people who have been to Walk The Moon shows describe the band as “high energy,” and throughout the three times I’ve seen the Ohio quartet, that descriptor has never been inaccurate.
Bear Hands surprised me with their performance since I went in believing that I had never heard of them but somehow already knew at least three of their songs. They put on an amazing show and I was very impressed with their use of creative lighting, something usually left to headlining acts. Of course, the musical aspect was amazing as well. I highly recommend checking them out!
Besides the energy that Walk The Moon brings to the stage, they have another quality that makes each and every one of their shows an amazing night: their ability to make every show feel personal and special, no matter how many shows are on a tour or where they are. From changing “Chicago” in the lyrics of fan-favorite “I Can Lift A Car” to “Grand Rapids,” to dedicating their cover of Ray Parker Jr.’s “Ghostbusters” to bassist Kevin Ray’s parents, who were in attendance on Friday, Walk The Moon knows how to make every concert feel like it matters to the band as much as it does to their audience.
Overall, Walk The Moon puts on a spectacular live performance. Their musical talent is apparent in every aspect of their show. Nick Petricca’s vocals sound nearly as good live as they do on a studio recording. Kevin Ray’s bass and Sean Waugaman’s drums provide a steady background for Eli Maiman’s guitar solos and riffs. If Walk The Moon’s winter tour, or any upcoming tours, happen to pass by you, I would highly recommend getting yourself a ticket. Trust me; it’ll be worth it.
